Report means that some form of the media made the fact known. A

Publish usually emphasizes the actual process of printing the paper, selling the ads, etc. Usually, you wouldn't say a fact was published, but that it was reported. You talk about the company that owns the newspaper as publishing it.

Printed means simply printed. However, sometimes it IS used as reported. The person interviewed says something he didn't mean to say and says "Hey, you're not going to print that, are you?" The New York Times has the motto "All the news that's fit to print."

Announce is when something is made known for the first time. Usually the "owner" of the news does the announcing - the company announced a new president, the zoo announces the birth of a new baby lion. Then it's up to the newspaper or tv or radio to report it.

It might be helpful if you gave us a few examples where you want to write a sentence but are confused over which word to choose.

By and large = in general
