what is the meaning of this idiom???

Hello everybody

I'm really very lucky to know about this forum and thanks for all members who help us to find what we need...

I was reading a book and I found this idiom. Would you please tell me what is the meaning of this idiom ( taken for granted ) ?? To be more specific, I read it in the following sentence:

The role of married women has changed since 1950s when it was taken for granted that they would stay home and raise the children.

Thanks a lot

It means that it was an automatic assumption that this would be true. The other way to use it is "I feel like you take me for granted" which means "You don't appreciate me. "

Unfortunately, it is often misspelled by people who don't know any better: "taken for granite".
