What is the meaning of this?

On the afternoon of 30th August 1989, fire broke out at Uppark, a large 18th century house in Sussex. For a year builders had been replacing the lead of the roof and by a stroke of irony, were due to finish the next day, on August 31st.

1. What is the meaning of " For a year ............August 31st"???

"The following morning, Uppark stood open to the sky. A sludge of wet charcoal covered the ground floor and basement, and in every room charred and fallen timbers lay amongst the smoke. It was a sense of utter devastation."

2. Uppark is a big house , but i don't understand the phrase" stood open to the sky". Is its roof destroy??

Builders had been working on the roof for a year. In other words, they had begun the work around the end of August 1988. The work was due to finish on August 31st 1989. The author thinks it is ironic that the fire started the day before they were due to finish.
