What is the meaning of "Romance" in "Romance Languages"?

Is it Roman (as in the Roman Empire) or "romance" as the common meaning "love affairs". I tend to believe it's "Roman" as this branch of Indo-European languages is derived from Latin, but I am not sure.
Thanks.

I'm no scholar, but I think you're right about it referring to the fact that a language comes from Latin.
