What is the meaning of " wound up"?

In the following sentences.

The couple lost their bet last year when Scott suffered chest pains and wound up in the emergency room at the University of Tennessee Medical Center — a non-profit teaching hospital.

Doctors diagnosed a mild heart attack. They inserted two stents to open up a blocked artery to his heart. It was a textbook case; with no complications, and Scott was released from the hospital after 72 hours.

I check the dictionaries, find the defination of wind up.

1. to cause to be finished, on purpose

2. to put oneself(in a certain place or state) accidentally.

Which one is suitable in the sentence? Or has some other meanings?

And could tell me another word suitable here?
