I found the following sentence on a BBC Future article that I've read recently. However, I cannot understand the structure of the following sentence. That said, I could just guess the meaning would be "There was a small light revolving around it on the clock face". However,
On the clock face was a small light revolving around it.

I see nothing else that "it" can refer to, other than the clock face itself. It isn't the greatest sentence ever written.
