What is the meaning of "if I may"?

Please someone tell me what is the meaning of "if I may".

Example sentence

I would like to enquire information about your product, if I may.

Please note that above sentence is not copied from somewhere else, because I've heard above phrase from a speech and I typed it as well as I could remembered. Therefore, there might be some issues, but the general idea is same as what I've heard.

Top answer

I would like to inquire about your product, if I may . It's a formal and somewhat old-fashioned way of saying 'please' or ' if that's OK with you'. eg I'd like to close the window, if I may.
