what is the meaning of 'fishing'

"I was professional and pleasant with everyone I spoke with, but I was most definitely fishing."

I think the word 'fishing' here is not the usual meaning.

The implication is that the 'fisher' is attempting to secure his/her goal even though he/she knows that the chances of success are slim.
