What is the meaning of "broad sweep of sand" and "narrow strip"?

Explanations needed.....

Does "a broad sweep of sand" mean "a wide, continuous, long area of sand"?
Does "a narrow strip of sand" mean "a narrow area of sand"?

"it's wide" (note apostrophe) is possible here, but I prefer "it is". This is because "is" benefits from a little emphasis which is not possible when the contraction is used.
