What is the meaning of analogue for?

Hello everyone. The following is a excerpt from David Holmes' Communication Theory. I had hard time understanding what the author meant by saying analogue for communication

The distinction between activity and passivity as well as that between mediated and unmediated communication falls well within the interactive paradigm, based as it is on the face-to-face or ‘transmission’ analogue for communication

I suspect it means "equivalent."

Thanks a lot. Having taken a look, I thought it might make sense. However, as it is a communication book I wanted to make sure that "analogue for" has nothing to do with communication in that context.

I think it was a poor choice of words by the author that led to the confusion and to a potential unintended pun!
