What is the meaning of "a day that goes by"?

I found the following sentence on a TV series. In fact, I cannot understand the purpose of using “by” in the sentence. Therefore, I would appreciate it if someone could let me know what is the reason that “by” is being used in the sentence. In addition, if it is possible, could someone please paraphrase the sentence without using “by”.

You know, Mom, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him.

Top answer

"goes by" means "passes". The word "by" literally means "past", in the sense of passing from one side of someone/something to the other. As well as days and years, physical things, such as cars and people, can "go by".
