What is the function of the word "it" in the following sentence?

We need to determine how long it takes the ball to fall 300 ft.

Is it we use the word "it" as a subject of the word "take"? Is the word "it" refers to the ball in the sentence?

I love that "Coke is it!" has been put it to good use in their latest campaign. "It is Coke!" would have done, but reversing it gives it emphasis. "It" is such an overused word.
