In British English an outlet may be called a socket. When I first read the original post I had in mind the kind of socket you use with a ratchet, and it took a moment to click that Kenny probably meant the other kind.

No, a British speaker would call the thing you push a plug into (to get electricity) a socket, while an American would normally call it an outlet. It's just two different names for the same thing.
