What is the English for the course registration system where many students can sign up with a professor, but only a limited number will be accepted and the rest will have to resign up with a less popular professor until in the end he gets a seat?

Thanks in advance.

No. Many students will sign up for the most welcome professor, and the students with the highest GPAs will be accepted until the class is full. Students with lower GPAs will have to study with a less popular prof. teaching the same course and of course, the least popular prof. will get students with the lowest GPAs.

That's an interesting system, but we don't have it here. You would have to say something like "registration priority is given according to GPA." (It does seem unfortunate for the lower students -- how are they ever going to improve if they have the worst professors?)
