What is the different meaning of two sentences?

#1: Many people spend their lives trying to create a lasting legacy on earth.
#2: Many people spend their lives to try to create a lasting legacy on earth.
The first one is the original sentence, but I am curious if the second one does work. What is the difference?
Thanks
