Faultfinding is just what it says - someone who looks for faults in someone else, rather than looking for their virtues. A nitpicker in the old days is someone who combed through someone else's hair (usually a child's hair), find and remove the microscopic eggs of lice. So it translates today of someone who has the unwelcome habit of finding the tiniest of defects and pointing them out.

  • Carp is more general - it means to complain loudly and continuously.
  • The reason for complaints can be someone else's faults or bad habits.
