What is the differences between " Version and edition"?

1) This book is a new version.

2) This book is a new edition.

Which one makes more sense? What is the difference between " version" and " edition"

Thanks

It depends a lot on the type of book you're talking about. If it's a new version of a novel, you'd almost expect to find some changes in the story. A new edition might be a special fancy limited printing for collectors, possibly including an introduction by some famous person.

  • If it's a dictionary, or a biology or history text book, the word "version" would seem a bit shabby, possibly implying that the previous printing was inaccurate, or contained information which had fallen into disrepute.
  • It would be understood that a new edition would be revised to include the latest information, and, of course, any corrections of errors which might have been overlooked in the previous edition.

Agreed.

Also: 'version' often applies to books which have been translated, and 'edition' may sometimes apply to a different publisher.

'My life of Crime' - the Bloggs Books edition.
'The Acropolis by Night' - J. Doe version. (translation)
