What is the difference of using and not using the article "the" in a title?

So, what is the difference if I call, say, my short story "The Artifact", as opposed to simply "Artifact"? I understand also that Facebook was originally called "The Facebook", until Mark Zuckerberg was advised to drop the "The" (at least it was so according to the movie). But what is the difference?

This is difficult to answer without context. Generally speaking, the artifact in the story "The Artifact" would be something that has been definitely identified, while the artifact in the story "Artifact" would be something that is not so easily identified. But it depends on the context.
