What is the difference "in need of" and "need" ?

Dear All.

I came across some sentence when I googling.

"He is in need of helps"

"Although If I'm feeling really in need of a coffee hit, I might have one there."

I'm confused that why don't it use "need" instead of "in need of"?

I want to know what case do we use "in need of" or "need" in sentence or verbal.

Thanks in anticipation

They mean the same thing. They could've used need but they chose in need of instead.
