What is the difference in meaning between these two sentences?

Hi,

1.Many parents find it hard to relate to their children when they are teenagers. (from an online dictionary)

2.Many parents find it hard to understand their children when they are teenagers.

What is the difference in meaning between these two sentences?

understand = figure out or know why they do the things they do.
