What is the difference between this two sentences?

1. Boys like it more than girls do.
2. Boys like it more than girls.

Why "do" is added in sentence 1? Can you give me some example about the usage of sentence 1?
And what is the meaning of these two sentences?

thanks

The first sentence is clear and leaves no room for confusion. The second one is less formal and can mean the same as 1. but it can also mean that boys like something more than they like girls.
