What is the difference between " subject/theme/subject matter" and " proposition"

Dear:

Is ( the subject/theme/suject matter) the same meaning? if we use them with words essays.

eg. what is the subject of the essay? is it hard.

What is the theme of the essay? is it hard.

what is the subject matter of the essay? is it hard.

how about the proposition of the essay? is it the same meaning as those words above? if not , when do we we use " proposition"

Subject can have many meanings but in the context of an essay it is the topic you are writing about. This use has the same meaning as subject matter.

Example:
The subject of my essay is The Civil War.
The subject matter of my essay is The Civil War.
These sentancese mean the same thing.

"Proposition" refers to the position that the author is taking with respect to the subject -- the case that he is trying to argue. For example, the essay's subject might be "20th century art", and the author's proposition might be that 20th century art is inferior to the art of earlier centuries.
