What is the difference between "hang on" and "hold on"?

I often hear the words. Especially on TV. "Hang on" and "Hold on". They use the words in case of that they want someone to wait for something. After all, what's the difference between the 2 of them?

Not really a difference. They are both telling you to wait for something. If I am on the phone and someone is going to give me an address to write down I might say, "Hang on while I get a pen and paper." Or "Hold on while I get a pen and paper."

They can be used for the same thing and they both sound perfectly natural in American English.
