what is the difference between "British" and "English"

Somebody corrected me that he is English but not British.

I am confused. What is the difference between a British and an English?? I really don't know the difference.

The term 'Britain' refers to the union of England, Scotland and Wales. ( Northern Ireland is often included. )

A person born eg in England is English.
A person born eg in Scotland is Scottish.
A person born eg in Wales is Welsh.

Although I agree with the responses, I wonder if the question was answered?
The person who corrected you said that he was English but not British. Have you your answer?

Perhaps the person meant that he does not like to be called British. Perhaps he would like England to become an independent country, as Scotland almost did recently.

Some people from England simply don't take kindly to being lumped in with the rest of Great Britain or the UK. I've known a few people from England who wouldn't be very happy if someone called them British.

Yes, the difference is sometimes broadcast openly, such as when Andy Murray (Scottish) became Britain's best tennis player, replacing Henman (English) who had tried unsuccessfully for years to give England a winner at Wimbledon. The fans had to settle for a British winner instead of an English winner.

While a person from England might describe themselves first as English, it seems rather unusual to me for such a person to actually object to being called British. I can more easily imagine this of a person from one of the other constituent countries.

If memory serves, Britannia Majoris was the name of the mainland of England/Scotland/Ireland when the Romans arrived. Thus Wales became Little Britain or Britannia Minoris. Forgive my spelling as I didn't take Latin. Great Britain was simple the interpretation of the Latin name.
