Semi-fixed expressions are groups of words that collocate highly—that are often if not almost always found together. Here are some examples:

You've never had it so good.
as sober as a judge
How do you do?
I thought you'd never ask.
to rain cats and dogs
a fat salary
run up a bill
squeaky clean

Among is used before countable nouns.
Amid or amidst are used before uncountable nouns. That's all.
