what is the difference?

Hi,

Please take a look and tell me what is the difference. One has no "As" and the other has two "As."

1. On further investigation, I found out that ...

When I made further investigation, it appears that ...

2. On a further investigation, I found out that ...

When I made a further investigation, it appears that ...

I think my difficluty with the variable noun lies with the fact that it seems that for some variable nouns take or not take articles when making a statement. Also, it seems when adjectives like "various" are added, it is likely that the countable form is used. I think I am right 90 percent of the time (giving me a high mark in terms of percentages) but sometimes I dither betwee
