I think my difficluty with the variable noun lies with the fact that it seems that for some variable nouns take or not take articles when making a statement. Also, it seems when adjectives like "various" are added, it is likely that the countable form is used. I think I am right 90 percent of the time (giving me a high mark in terms of percentages) but sometimes I dither between two available choices.

Having said that, I think the first set is using the word in a general sense, not referring to anything or based on any context in terms of conducting investigation of an identifiable sort.

On the other hand, the 2nd one indicates it is referring to a investigation which is most likely, at least from my view of things, made before.
