Aware and conscious are very similar; their meanings overlap a lot. Conscious mainly means the opposite of unconscious, which describes a person's state when they're asleep or have lost consciousness as a result of a blow to the head, or a severe injury or bodily system failure that prevents the brain from operating normally. So if a person is able to view and respond to his environment, he is conscious.
