What is the correct way to say this?

Does this make sense?

I hate when I type something, look up at the screen and nothing has been typed. Make sure the cursor is where you want to type before typing.
I hate it when I type something, look up at the screen and see nothing has been typed. Make sure you click the cursor where you want to type before you start typing.

Thank you

I probably include the 'it' most of the time. There are those who disapprove. There are also others who would eliminate 'when' as well: I hate typing something, only to look up at the screen and see that nothing has been typed.
