0I would say it [ lIpo ] - or [ l@Ipo ] -. AHD says that "liposuction" is pronounced as /laIpoUsVkS@n/ or /lIpoUsVkS@n/ whereas Dictionary.com says it's /laIp@sVkS@n/ or /lIp@sVkS@n/ . I usually pronounce "liposuction" as [ l@IposVkS@n ] .0-

0I heard most people pronounce it as LAIPO... why? Is it because the P followed by the letter "O"? I think there are some rule out there to help people learn how to pronounce without look it in the dictionary.02br

00Do you guys know the story of the five letters "A, E, I, O, U"? I think there is a rule out there that is associated to those letters.02br

0 Well, as you know, there are no real "spelling rules" in English. I think people tend towards saying it like that not because of the "o", but because there is only one P following the "i". If it were lippo, I'm sure most people would tend towards /lIpoU/ .0-

0 I wish there is a "one rule fits all " type of thing in English and it would makes people's life much easier. 0-

You are probably referring to the "Second Letter Rule". If the second letter after a vowel is another vowel, the first vowel has the tense ("long") pronunciation, not the lax ("short") pronunciation. The rule doesn't always work, though, so

The thing you must understand first about the word liposuction is that it is a medical term. It stems from lipids or laymen terms "fats" you have fat cells in your body, and the procedure is to remove fat cells. Because of this like many other medical terms the English way to pronounce it dose not necessarily account for anything. Sure the majority pronounce it incorrectly, (that is LIEposuction)
