What is the correct tense for this sentence?

Are those words in brackets gramatically correct?

Here are the sentences:
When Bryan and I (were) classmates, we (were) always (studying) together.

Thank you, Clive. But I am still confused with the word "always". Since it was about past time, we use Simple Past Tense. Isn't "always" the time signal for Simple Present Tense?

"Always" can go with different tenses:

I will always remember you.
I have always loved English.
I used to always arrive early.

It sound rather casual and conversational.
