what is the AE for "learner driver"?

Hi,Looks like "learner driver" is very common in BE?Curiously, I have NOT been able to find an equivalent AE term....I am aware that there is the word combination "driver's permit" but...you see .... I am looking for something more "elegant" than just "a driver with a driver's permit" (to designate a learner driver) in AE.Hope my question makes sense......mus-te
