What is "the thing"?

In this sentence, "You ask a lot of questions. First it was the thing about who I talked to in the living room...", what does this "the thing" mean, and can I say that sentence without using "the thing"?

"the thing" is "the matter", "the business", less likely, "the affair". You can also leave it out completely:

First, it was about who I talked to in the ...

You could say "the thing with Hitler and the tanks and so on" and it would be taken to mean that you are referring to the whole World War II affair in general.
