yes, I know. but judging from the context, "independence" and "independence that is sought" seem to have a contrasting quality. I just don't get that.

It's quite hard to understand. Perhaps it means that you are able to make your own way in the world. You are not a farmer living off the grid, making your own power and growing your own food, which would be true independence (in this author's eyes), but rather you are able to do what is necessary within the world to not have to rely on others to take care of everything for you.

I think the difficulty with this passage is that there is no active subject for "sought"---just who is it doing the seeking here? A better choice might have been: "it is not independence that is necessary."
