Chadr, more commonly spelt as Chadar, chaddar, chudder etc, literally means "sheet" in Hindi, Bengali and perhaps other North Indian languages. However, the word when used in the English language has come to mean "shawl", or something very close to it.

In Persian, it is the cover (usually black) some women wear in front of men or when they pray. It looks like a big shawl that covers all the body.
