What is "a matter of public record"? Thanks.

What is "a matter of public record"? Thanks.

Forbes and his staff analyzed Carlos Ferlini’s bill from St. Joseph’s, using figures that American hospitals are required to submit to the federal government each year. Those figures are a matter of public record.

I checked the dictionary, there is a saying that a matter of record is a phrase and means that the things or figures can be checked and have a record or a file. But what is a matter of public record.

Does that mean that the record and file are open to public?

Thank you very much.

When a document (or a part of a document, such as specific figures and findings) is referred to as "a matter of public record," the speaker is indicating that members of the general public have the legal right to read and/or request a copy of that document. This is a great answer, but please note the original question was asked and answered to the poster's satisfaction five years ago.

Great answers are always welcome here, but it would be a better use of your efforts to look for recent posts that don't have any answers (or don't have a comprehensive answer) and share your thoughts there.

I didn't consider "Yes, precisely" to be a satisfactory answer to the question "What is 'a matter of public record?'", hence my contribution. You might consider making your auto-responder be a bit less snarky, as people other than the original poster might be interested in an actual answer, regardless of the time since original posting.

Hi,

The original post ended with the question Does that mean that the record and file are open to public?

'Yes, precisely' was intended as an answer to this.

I agree. The answers that appear after the "Yes, precisely" are more satisfactory and useful than those that appear before. The moderator's response was also a bit snarkier than it needed to be, though I understand the need to moderate and keep input on old threads to a minimum. Thank you for a great website!

Exactly! I enjoyed YOUR answer much more then the first. Why does it matter WHEN it was posted? This post is STILL up,is it not? FIVE years later! Thanks for the info. GREAT answer.
