What is "protecting the game"?

Hi

What does "protect the game" mean in the following sentence?

Ten years ago the family had moved to London, leaving a skeleton staff to maintain the house and protect the game.

Thank you in advance

Perhaps it means the wildlife that lived on the grounds of the family's country estate? Making sure poachers didn't come kill it? Would that fit the context?

That's how I would read it.

Game is animals like pheasants and deer, which people shoot in a form of hunting.

1. Maybe there is a wildlife there. It is not mentioned directly but what is the relationship (I mean symantically) between wildlife and game?

2. Doesn't it mean " to observe the law" if i'm right? I mean if there is a law that makes an owner of a house to have someone to do law affairs of the house OR a law that doesn't permit someone to have a house wi

No, "game" refers to animals. See Dave's post. If the family had a large estate with woods, there would be deer, pheasant, and who knows what else that people would hunt.

It has nothing to do with being compliant with the law.
