What is proper article?

Hi, I bring my a concern, I don't know what is more proper article for "sultan" between the or a.

This sentence is first part of some paragraph.


Local legends say that Borneo's few thousand wild elephants are descendants from those brought to the island from India or Malaysia as a gift to sultan in the eighteenth century.
