What is past state?

We say that whenever we talk about a past state only "used to" is correct to use while using 'would' in past state is considered as wrong.What does the past state mean here?

Both of these refer to a time in the past and both are correct.

When I was young, we used to visit grandmother once a week.
When I was young, we would visit grandmother once a week.

Can you give an example of using "would" in the past that is wrong?
