To add to what Clive said, you may also be interested to know that 'Participle' is from traditional grammar, and it was used because grammarians wanted to draw attention to the way one word-class could become another (i.e. participate in the function of another).

Participles are verb forms when used in combination with an auxiliary to form a compound tense, aspect, or voice; and they can also function as or like an adjective to modify nouns:

"She is entertaining her friends". [verb used with an auxiliary to form the progressive aspect]

"I saw an entertaining show". [participial adjective modifying the noun "show"]
