What is Out of the box?

Could anyone please clarify what the following line saying, and also the meaning of "Out of the box":

So what did I do wrong? Doesn't seem to have worked too well 'out of the box'!

Top answer

I think it means unusual and maybe here unusually. Or maybe he has worked well although he wasn't supposed to.

I'm afraid I don't really understand Coloraday's interpretations. English Learner 123, could you give some more context, please? What doesn't seem to have worked too well?

Hi,

'Right out of the box' is an idiom meaning 'immediately, without any hesitation'.

eg When I met him, I liked him right out of the box.

Best wishes, Clive

When you buy a new product it usually comes in a box.

If everthing goes well you take it out of the box, switch it on and it works instantly. If not then you have to read the manual, insert the batteries, load the software or whatever.

But you expect it work "out of the box", so if it doesn't work "out of the box" then something is wrong.
