What is meaning of the "a" as in alive astern aboard?

There are many English words that have an a added as in alive, astern, aboard. What does the "a" actually mean or do.
Live is a word has one or two meanings, typically referring to something having life or used by electrical engineers.
I travel by railway and at the end of the platforms there is a safety notice - Danger Conductor Rails Alive.
What does the A mean or do to a word?

What is does is to signal that it can't be used before a noun, i.e., attributively. It can only be used predicatively.

They were asleep is OK, but not Asleep people should not be disturbed.
