What is meaning of "AS BY" ? and "to get the better of"

Hi

I have looked up this "AS BY" and the meaning of do down sombody/something.

do down verb
: to get the better of (as by trickery)

from https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/do%20down#synonyms

do down
in American English
1. to criticize, belittle, or demean; disparage
2. to gain advantage over, as by deception

from https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/do-down

My questions 1: What is meaning of as by?

My questions 2: I cannot understand what merriam-webster said about "to get the better of (as by trickery)". Is that different to Collins's one?
