What is "marine grunts"?

What is "marine grunts" in the following paragraph? To be preciouse, what is the difference between "young marines of the 1/5" and "yound marine grunts"?

"Despite the blood they've seen so far, the young Marines of the 1/5 haven't turned hard yet -- or at least not any harder than young Marine grunts already are. They still look fresh-faced and eager and generally unafraid. They will do what they have to do."

Top answer

In the Marine Corps, ' grunt ' is 'originally a pejorative term for Infantry Marines but now a source of pride'. 'Grunts of the 1/5' are Marine grunts belonging to the 1st Division and 5th Batallion (if I have my units correct) of the Corps.

Thanks but that means the comparison is between "young marines of 1st division 5th batallion" and all other young marines? The young marines of 1st division 5th batallion is not harder than all other young marines?

The author is comparing the young Marines of the 1/5 with young Marines in general. He is saying that the young Marines of the 1/5 are about equal in "hardness" with any other young Marine.

Marine grunts are Marine Corps Infantrymen. The term is used in a derogatory way by non-grunts and used with affection to describe themselves.
