what is "malevolent hellspawn"??

Saw this on Modern Family

"But I didn't want to get halfway into a trip to Yellowstone before Phil discovered what malevolent hellspawn we have for children Whom I love very much."

In this, I do not understand what "malevolent hellspawn we have for children" means. I think it is kinda metaphor but can not know the exact meaning. HELP plz...
