What is it? participle phrase coming after an object

Hi. Please help. What do you call the part underlined? I don't think it is an adjectival phrase. If it isn't an adjectival phrase, can you tell me how we can know it is not an adjectival phrase? Could we apply some kind of test?

He can't stand her pretending to be normal.

How about this? Thank you in advance.

He can't stand her trying to be what she isn't.

The 'her' is included in the nonfinite. 'Pretending/trying' are gerund-participals and the phrases are adverbial (or perhaps verb complements?).
