I think it's call a splinter... And I don't like this feeling you're talking about either . Surely there's a lady or a girl around you who has a vanity case at hand ?

Let us talk about a piece of computer hardware. It may be a graphic card, NIC card, etc.

You wouldn't ask the others by saying 'what is it called' , would you?

You would ask the others by saying 'what is the name of this' , wouldn't you?

On the east coast of Canada it's called a "splinter". On the west coast of Canada it's called a "sliver". Both terms are used for the same meaning in my Canadian Oxford Dictionary. Hope you get it out!
