What is Internet Doing to Movies and the News?

The internet is clearly changing the dynamics of the film industry, advertising, film production, and maybe even the way we think. With all shifts there are those who benefit and others who may be harmed by it.
I recently asked a film director I know if he?s uploaded any trailers of his work onto YouTube, his response was vicious and even a little scary. He hates YouTube I think he called it exploitational. He may have a point. It has played a role in ugly events such as that girl in Florida getting brutally beaten up by a gang of other girls who were at least partly motivated to do so for the purposes of creating a bit YouTube hit.
However, video sharing sharing sites also have a lot of positives. For example, they open new avenues for presentation and marketing of new works by Independent filmmakers and actors in particular (and also are great at promoting good causes such as the plight of bats). The other good thing, in my mind, is that it has generated a resurgence of interest in short films.
It has been said that history works in cycles. When movies were first invented, they were just short films and there were line ups to see them. For a while news clippings and short films were shown in movie theaters before the feature presentation. But that gave way too ads. Some feared that short films were a dying and under-appreciated art form. But now they are big again, thanks to internet and video sharing sites.
Over a hundred years ago some entrepreneurs started producing the first pornos too, catering to a controversial human craving, with this new invention and that drove up the demand for this new entertainment medium. There were line-ups to see peep shows. One can argue that history has repeated itself again with Internet and video sharing sites.
Perhaps the most important way that Internet is the challenge it poses against the fascist media monopoly. Now, whenever the media posts more death-merchant propaganda, independent voices will quickly react against it with YouTube responses and blogs posts.

No wonder the fascist war-profiteering news conglomerates want to end net neutrality and apply a stranglehold on independent sources of news and opinion on the Internet.
