Neither. His first name is not given, and his last name is not given either.

His first initial (the first letter of his first name) is "M". His first name could be "Martin", for example.

Is Michael his first name or his last name? I'm still confused.
In class, I usually call him Mr.S.

In my example, Michael would be his first name and Smith would be his last name. Michael would be the name chosen for him by his parents, while Smith would be the name he shares with other members of his family.
