What is "held together with" meaning ?

Hi.

I can't quite a catch the meaning about "held together with".
What is "held together with" meaning ?

This is come from here, Some people say this expression might come from 16 century, when bundles of document were held together with the red tape.

The picture that CalifJim provided shows a group of financial documents with an elastic/rubber band holding them together. If this were the 16th century, before they had rubber bands, a piece of red ribbon would be used to hold them together. Does this still not help?
