What is different between OPPONENT and RIVAL

I am very confused about the difference between OPPONENT and RIVAL. Anyone help? thank in advance!

Here's the underlying idea.

My opponent - He is against me in some way. He wants to defeat me.

My rival - He and I both want something, and are competing for it.

a rival is someone that might have a personal feud with you, and an opponent is merely someone that's opposing you in a challenge, but without the challenge you would not have any personal issues with them.
